The basics
What is LoreLoom?
It's a place to create AI characters and actually talk to them. You give a character a name, a personality, a backstory, and a voice, and then you roleplay with it — conversations that grow and change based on what you say. People use it for storytelling, worldbuilding, language practice, drafting fiction, or just the company of a character they made up.
Do I need an account?
You can browse the public gallery as a guest. To create characters, save chats, and roleplay, you'll want an account. Guests only ever see the safe-for-work public side of the site.
Is it free?
Yes, there's a free tier. Free accounts get a set number of messages per day, which resets daily. If you run out before the reset, you can also watch a short rewarded ad to top your daily messages back up, up to a few times a day.
Characters
What's the difference between a private and a public character?
Private characters are yours alone — nobody else can see them or chat with them. Image moderation still applies to any picture you upload, on private and public characters alike. Public characters go into the gallery where anyone can find and chat with them, so their public details get screened as well before they show up.
Can I edit or delete a character after making it?
Yes. You can edit any field at any time, and there's a delete button on the character. If you edit a public character, its public details (and any new image) get re-checked when you save.
What can the AI actually "see" about my character?
The AI reads the private "brain" fields — personality, deep lore and memory, and dialogue examples — plus the first message. Those shape how it behaves. The "detailed backstory" field is not sent to the AI; it's a public lore page for readers only. If you want the character to know something, put it in the brain fields. Why does the gallery show things like "Loremaster" or "Expressive" on a card?
Those are just at-a-glance signals about how much depth a character has — for example, a lot of deep lore, or a rich set of dialogue examples. They're computed from the size of those fields on our side; the actual private text never leaves the backend, only the little badges do.
What are the {{char}} and {{user}} tags?
They're placeholders you use in dialogue examples. {{char}} stands for your character
and {{user}} stands for whoever is chatting. They let you write sample exchanges that
teach the AI the character's speech style.
Roleplay and the AI
Why do the character's replies sometimes drift or feel off?
Usually it's down to what the character has to work with. A thin personality and no dialogue examples give the AI little to hold onto. The other common cause is over-directing — writing the character's own actions and lines for them. Our roleplay guide covers how to avoid both.
How do I write actions versus dialogue?
Wrap actions and narration in asterisks — *she steps back* — and put spoken words in
quotes. The character mirrors whatever format your first message and your own messages use, so keep
it consistent.
Does the character remember earlier in the conversation?
It follows the ongoing scene and stays anchored to the character's core lore and personality, so it keeps its identity and the thread of what's happening rather than resetting each message.
Content and safety
I made a character public and it got tagged 18+. Why?
When you publish, the public-facing text — name, tagline, card blurb, first message, and tags — is checked for mature content. If any of it reads as adult, the character is marked 18+: it still publishes, but it only shows up for signed-in adult accounts. If you didn't mean for it to be adult, edit those public fields and save again to have them re-checked.
Why was my image rejected?
Uploaded images are screened for not-safe-for-work content, and anything that fails is rejected at upload — it's never saved, on public or private characters alike. Images are the one thing that's hard-blocked rather than just tagged.
Where does mature roleplay happen, then?
Only in private, logged-in sessions, and only for accounts that have confirmed they're 18+ and turned it on. None of it appears in the public gallery or anywhere ads run. The full picture is in the safety and content rules and the content policy.
Limits and account
What's the message limit?
Free accounts get a daily allowance of messages that resets each day. If you run out, you'll be able to pick up again after the reset. You can also top your allowance back up sooner by watching a rewarded ad — that refills your daily messages, up to a few times a day.
How big can an uploaded image be?
Up to 4MB, and it has to be an actual image file. Other file types aren't accepted.
